The group's greatest fame came during the early s. The group was formed in Chicago in the late s while still in high school. The group performed at their High School "Senior Varieties" talent show. Clarence Johnson left he group later that year, and their name was subsequently shortened to the Chi-Lites. Record never collaborated with members outside his singing group. In , the group meet with record producer Carl Davis and signed a contract with Brunswick Records out of Chicago.

With a departure from Johnson in and after discovering that the name Hi-Lites was already in existence, the band reworked their name to also pay homage to their home town Chicago, becoming known as The Chi-Lites. Subsequent years would bring a string of unfortunate events which would once again impact the final line-up leaving it with Marshall Thompson, his wife Tara and Fred Simpson to continue the Chi-Lites legacy. The Chi-Lites had been around for nearly a decade before they finally had a hit in the late '60s. Eugene Record , Robert Lester , and Clarence Johnson formed the doo wop group the Chanteurs in the late '50s, and they released one single on Renee Records in Over the next four years, the Hi-Lites released a number of singles on local labels. By the end of the year, Johnson left the group and the remaining quartet truncated their name to the Chi-Lites.
