Your directions, your links.
Last updated 17 October 2026: the public pages now show one banner ad (see Advertising).
What a card stores
Exactly what you type into it: the title, the start, the steps, the arrival notes and the map pin if you add one. It is stored in our database so the share link works. There is no account, no name, no email address and no phone number.
Who can read a card
Anyone who has its share link. The link is long and random and is never listed anywhere on this site, and card pages tell search engines not to index them, but a link can be forwarded. That is why you should never put gate codes, alarm codes or the place a key is hidden on a card.
The edit link
The card database keeps only a one-way fingerprint (SHA-256) of the edit link, so we cannot look it up or send it to you. The edit link is a page address, though, and like every page address it appears in the web server logs described below. If you lose it, the card can no longer be changed; it is deleted on its own after 400 days without being opened.
How long cards are kept
Until you delete one from its edit page, or until 400 days pass without the card being opened or edited. A nightly job then deletes it. Database backups are kept for 14 days.
What else the server keeps
- Daily counters that limit how many new cards are made per day from one address and one network. The address is stored only as a salted one-way hash and the counters are deleted after three days.
- Web server logs (address, time, page, browser), as on any website, for security and troubleshooting. Card contents are sent in the request body, which is not logged.
- One cookie holding a security token for the card form. No advertising or tracking cookies, no analytics services and no third-party fonts. The only outside script is the adengine.us banner on the public pages, described under Advertising; it also counts one page view per page as a daily total.
Advertising
The public pages of Lanecard (the home page, How it works and Pricing) show one banner ad from AdEngine (adengine.us), the small ad network run by WeldonPC, the company behind this site. For now the ads are for WeldonPC’s own services. The banner sits below the page’s content and is never printed. Cards (the phone page, text version and print sheets), the card maker and edit pages, this page, the terms and error pages show no ad, so nothing on a card is ever near an ad.
To show an ad, your browser loads a script from adengine.us, asks it for one banner, loads the banner image, and reports once that the page was viewed and once that the banner was shown. Like any website, adengine.us receives your address, your browser type and the address of this site with those requests.
- No cookies, no profile. AdEngine sets no cookies, gives you no ID and does not track you from site to site.
- How your address is used. adengine.us looks up the approximate city for your address in a location database kept on its own server (nothing is sent to anyone else), so that ads meant for one area are shown only there. It also uses the address to count each ad view or click only once and to leave out robots and WeldonPC’s own office traffic. The address is not stored with the counts; the temporary entries made from it expire within six hours and are cleared from the server within two days.
- What is kept. Daily totals only: page views for this site, and views and clicks for each ad. The adengine.us web server also keeps a standard access log (address, time, address requested, referring site, browser) for security; it is deleted on a rolling schedule.
- Clicking an ad passes through adengine.us, which counts the click, and then opens the advertiser’s site, which has its own privacy policy.
- Nothing about you is sold or shared.
Map links
If a card has a map pin, its page shows two plain links (your phone's map app, and OpenStreetMap). Nothing from those services is loaded until a visitor taps one.
Payments
No payment is taken during the preview. When checkout opens it will run through PayPal, and this page will say what is kept about a subscription before then.
